“The San Francisco Symphony, led by Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen, announced its 2023-24 season, which will begin on Sept. 22,” writes Joshua Kosman in Tuesday’s (3/28) San Francisco Chronicle. “As part of his fourth season as music director of the San Francisco Symphony, Esa-Pekka Salonen plans to conduct world premieres by composers Terry Riley and Anders Hillborg, collaborate with Alonzo King Lines Ballet in a staging of Ravel’s ‘Mother Goose,’ introduce his recent composition ‘Kinema,’ and curate his first program for the SoundBox series. The 2023-24 season … also includes performances of two classic one-act operas from the early 20th century: Schoenberg’s ‘Erwartung,’ directed by Peter Sellars, and Bartók’s ‘Bluebeard’s Castle.’ Music Director Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas is scheduled to lead four weeks of programming with the orchestra, including music by Mahler, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky. Conductor Laureate Herbert Blomstedt, at 96, plans to conduct works by Schubert and Beethoven…. Part of the season is the California Festival, a statewide collaboration among more than 50 musical organizations spearheaded by the Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the San Diego Symphony. The two-week festival, scheduled for Nov. 3-19, focuses on music written during the past five years.”
